The EU-funded project strengthens the region\u2019s role as a forerunner in the green transition: solutions are also being tested in other European cities. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Nordic Energy Capital project, led by the City of Vaasa, entered its implementation phase on October 1. At the beginning of this phase, simulation work was launched to model the energy system of Vaskiluoto and to develop solutions for more efficient and low-emission energy use. Through these simulations, it is possible to test and design new ways of utilizing electricity and heat in combination, as well as to improve energy efficiency in cities.   <\/p>\n<p>The four-year project (2025\u20132029) is part of the European Commission\u2019s European Urban Initiative (EUI) program. The total budget amounts to 5,39 million euros, of which the EU\u2019s funding share is 4,31 million euros. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2013 We are now moving from planning to action. It\u2019s great to be able to demonstrate how the solutions developed in Vaasa can contribute to the green transition across Europe, says <strong>Suvi Aho, <\/strong>Strategy Manager at the City of Vaasa. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Knowledge-based solutions and engaging energy development<\/h2>\n<p>The project supports the City of Vaasa\u2019s Climate Neutral Vaasa 202X goal by developing new types of engaging, knowledge-based solutions for energy use and heat utilization. At the same time, it aims to increase residents\u2019 understanding of energy. <\/p>\n<p>To achieve this goal, a digital twin is being built in Vaskiluoto. It is an exact virtual model that makes it possible to test and optimize the interaction between electricity and heat systems. In parallel, an energy efficiency model based on satellite data and measurements is being developed. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2013 We are also developing tools that promote citizen participation, such as an interactive energy portal, and deepening Vaasa\u2019s unique energy education pathway, says Aho.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>European cities follow Vaasa\u2019s solutions<\/h2>\n<p>The solutions developed in the Nordic Energy Capital project are also being tested and applied in other European cities as part of the EU\u2019s learning network. Participating cities include Ume\u00e5 (Sweden), Alcal\u00e1 de Guada\u00edra (Spain), and Fyli (Greece), representing different types of urban areas: a climate-neutral city in the north, an industrial hub in the south, and a suburb on the Mediterranean. <\/p>\n<p>The collaboration is based on the cities\u2019 own interest in developing local energy solutions and participating in a shared learning process. During the project, plans are made for how the solutions developed in Vaasa can be adapted to each city\u2019s needs. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2013 Vaasa is doing this not just for itself, but for all of Europe.
